No, TheBear chef.
While it’s widely accepted that The Bear is a critically acclaimed show filled with immense talent, viewers of the 2024 Emmys weren’t necessarily in agreement with the annual award show’s decision to place the FX series in the comedy category.
Even Emmys cohosts Eugene Levy and Dan Levy poked fun at the unusual categorization during their opening monologue.
Noting that the show is the most nominated comedy in Emmys history, the American Pie star joked, “I love the show, and I know some of you are expecting us to make a joke about whether The Bear is really a comedy. But in the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes.”
Though the Chicago-based chef show lost out to Hacks in the Outstanding Comedy Series category, it nearly swept all of the major acting categories.
Guest stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Jon Bernthal won for Guest Actress and Actor in a Comedy Series at the Creative Arts Emmys. And star Jeremy Allen White picked up the Lead Actor in a Comedy Series trophy as did supporting stars Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colón-Zayas.
And while many agreed that the actors deserved their flowers, it was the comedy categorization that upset Emmys viewers as they felt the wins took away from other top comedic actors on hit shows like Abbott Elementary, Only Murders in the Building, and more.
“I really, really, *really* need the Television Academy to fix the category criteria before next year’s #Emmys,” one commenter wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Because ‘The Bear’ sweeping comedy over shows like ‘Abbott Elementary’ is actually infuriating. All those actors and actual comedies deserve better.”
The viewers didn’t deny the talent of The Bear’s cast, with another person tweeting, “Is everyone ready for a CRAZY opinion??? The Bear is great and the cast is all doing stellar work, but the show is not a comedy and if I were an actor saying actual jokes in an actual comedy I’d be so f—king annoyed watching every award get snatched away!!! #emmys.”
Another commenter called White “an amazing actor,” but pointed out that he “hasn’t delivered one funny line in three seasons.”
